What is Neurodiversity?

July 29, 20221 min read

You may have heard or seen the word thrown around in different literature or social circles over the years, but what exactly is Neurodiversity??

The Definition.

Neurodiversity is a term coined by Judy Singer, a social scientist, in the late 1990s, and it highlights the natural cognitive and behavioral differences of individuals with unique connections in the brain. In other words, it’s completely normal for people’s brains, and the resultant behavior to be different from “normal” brains. Just as no two snowflakes or fingerprints are exactly alike, so it is with the brain.

The Facts.
Neurodiversity data and facts have destigmatized the so-called disorders like Attention Deficit Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Through dedicated study and compassionate research, neurodiversity showcases the empowering characteristics so often expressed through these differences. Now when it comes to everyday executive functioning skills like attention, problem-solving, flexible thinking, working memory, self-control, and even emotional control are many of the areas in which the neurodiverse struggle. This is where the coaches at My Life Tutors excel. Our systems are designed, tested, and proven to bridge the gap between the unique qualities of the neurodiverse and their abilities to maintain the executive functioning skills that are necessary for today’s society.

The Mission.

At My Life Tutors, we view the varying symptoms of these unique connections like ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and Synesthesia (“seeing sounds”) not as disorders but as constellations within the vast universe of the brain. Our college educated staff not only take the neurodiverse into account, but many of them have direct experience with neurodiversity - some being neurodiverse themselves. This area is our specialty!
